Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI) said on Wednesday it has approved three data centre projects – the biggest one involving TikTok – with a combined investment value of THB913 billion (US$27 billion).
The TikTok project – which is valued at THB842 billion – involves installing additional servers and expanding data storage and processing infrastructure across Bangkok, Samut Prakan and Chachoengsao Province to support rising demand for digital services.
Beyond its core infrastructure investment, TikTok has also committed to developing digital literacy and e-commerce curricula to help create new business opportunities for Thai entrepreneurs and strengthen the country's digital workforce.
The BOI also approved a THB46 billion data centre investment project by Skyline Data Center and Cloud Services, part of the UAE-based DAMAC Group. Located in Chachoengsao, the project will support an IT load capacity of 200MW.
A third data centre project by Bridge Data Centres was approved with an investment value of THB24.6 billion. The project in Chonburi will support an IT load of 134MW.
In an adjacent move, the BOI also said it has advanced plans for clean energy mechanisms, including direct renewable power purchase agreements, which would allow private companies to buy and sell renewable electricity directly.
The BOI is also coordinating with relevant agencies to consider regulatory improvements that would facilitate clean energy investment, including easing power-generation licensing conditions for foreign operators installing solar rooftops, and clarifying rules to support self-generation under independent power supply (IPS) arrangements.
BOI secretary general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said the latest approvals will strengthen Thailand's role in regional digital infrastructure, which will in turn boost investor confidence in Thailand at a time when global companies are racing to expand digital infrastructure across Asia.
“Amid continuing global volatility, investment in Thailand's digital and advanced technology sectors continues to grow, reflecting investor confidence in the country's potential as a regional technology hub,” Narit said in a statement.
Earlier this week, Digital Edge and power producer B.Grimm Power landed a US$880 million green loan to finance the development of their joint venture's 100MW data centre Campus in Chonburi.
