Syria has signed an agreement with Barcelona-based Medusa Submarine Cable System for the country’s first international subsea cable landing, state-run Ikhbariya TV reported.
According to Medusa’s website, the system will connect 12 countries across North Africa and southern Europe, creating a corridor linking the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea.
The deal marks a significant step for Syria as it looks to rebuild critical digital infrastructure after 14 years of civil war and decades of Western sanctions. The country continues to suffer from poor internet connectivity, with many users relying on costly mobile data for even basic online tasks.
Syria’s new leadership, which came to power after the ousting of Bashar al-Assad last December, has pledged to accelerate improvements in public services, including communications.
Earlier this year, senior officials told Reuters the government was in talks with regional telecom operators Zain, Etisalat, STC and Ooredoo on a $300 million project to expand the country’s fibre-optic network.
