Cellular coverage in the dense and capacity-strained central business district of Jakarta is set to improve thanks to a new contract for outdoor DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems) announced by Indonesia's leading cellular distribution company, P.T. Solusi Tunas Pratama (STP).

The company is installing a high-performance GSM, CDMA, and UMTS cellular distribution system. The new system supports better coverage while enabling the elimination of macro cell towers, addressing the Indonesian government’s mandate to improve public safety and eliminate visual clutter in Jakarta.

The system will also allow local cellular providers to support traffic for value-added services such as police surveillance cameras and Wi-Fi networks.

The technology used for the new DAS network is supplied by ADC Network Solutions. Known as FlexWave Prism, the units are specifically designed to  deliver coverage and capacity in dense urban areas.

Commenting on the new system,  Nobel Tanihaha, president and CEO for STP said: "We held a competitive bidding process and selected ADC because it offered the most cost-effective and efficient solution, along with a strong local support organisation. With the ability to support multiple cellular operators and services with single set of remote antennas, the FlexWave Prism system was far more efficient than the others we evaluated."

The deployment will cover the very dense and capacity-strained central business district of Jakarta. Each remote will be fed and managed from a centralised base station hotel for Indonesia’s major cellular providers. In addition to supporting three different services – GSM 1800MHz, UMTS 2100MHz, and CDMA 850MHz – the Prism units offer digital simulcast services, a capability that helps reduce operational costs for STP by configuring the remote network to support multi-sector single operators or multi-operator microcell applications.

"In a world where both voice and data usage are increasing and dense urban areas need a more finely-targeted, higher-capacity cellular distribution system, the FlexWave Prism system delivers high capacity, high service flexibility, and a low total cost of operation," commented Tony LeFebvre, director of product management for outdoor DAS products for ADC. "As providers like STP are discovering, our Prism system helps operators improve urban coverage and capacity while consolidating base station locations for higher operational efficiency."

ADC Network Solutions develops and provides products for high-performance wireless coverage and capacity to business and consumer subscribers in any indoor or outdoor location. The company is the global leader in advanced in-building wireless solutions and compact network systems, and in solutions to enhance coverage in macro networks.

The US based company has a turnover of USD1.5BN, employs over 10,000 staff and is active in around 130 countries.
