Omantel upgrades mobile network to 5G SA

Omantel announced on Sunday it has successfully and seamlessly upgraded its network to support 5G Standalone (SA) services and boost its ability to support the next wave of digital technologies in Oman.

Omantel said the upgrade enables it to roll out 5G SA use cases including next-generation voice services (Voice over 5G), tailored network solutions, RedCap-based IoT services and ultra-low latency applications.

Samy Ahmed Al Ghassany, chief of tech and digital at Omantel, said 5G SA will accelerate innovation, drive digital transformation, and open new opportunities for individuals, businesses, and industries across the country.

“As a regional digital powerhouse and local innovation enabler, we are committed to ensuring that Oman remains at the forefront of connectivity and innovation,” he said in a statement.

Omantel also said the upgrade was delivered seamlessly with no disruption to customers.

Omantel first launched 5G as a fixed-wireless access (FWA) offering in December 2019. The telco launched non-standalone (NSA) 5G in February 2021.
