Huawei and inwi roll out transportation corridor coverage solution

Moroccan operator inwi has partnered with Huawei to commercially deploy what is described as an innovative 1.8GHz + 2.1GHz dual-band 8T8R solution across the country's major transportation corridors, including high-speed railway and highway routes.
The 1.8 GHz+2.1GHz 8T8R RF module is a Huawei-developed FDD remote radio unit (RRU) with eight transmit channels and eight receive (8T8R) channels. It supports the 1.8GHz and 2.1GHz frequency bands and can be used in multiple modes, such as GSM, UMTS, LTE, NB-IoT, and NR. inwi and Huawei say they have jointly deployed the solution, which works with high-gain Hertz antennas, to significantly improve signal coverage.
Powered by Huawei's HyperBeamforming technology, the solution delivers a 13 dB coverage gain over legacy two transmit and two receive (2T2R) networks, extends coverage by nearly one kilometre, improves average downlink user-perceived throughput by 83%, and increases the number of active users by a factor of 3.2.
HyperBeamforming mainly applies to scenarios where horizontal coverage is narrow (for example, high-speed railway coverage scenarios). With this feature, coverage scenarios can be specified for FDD 8T8R cells to generate narrow beams by weighting signals, improving coverage depth. In this way, cell-edge user experience can be improved.
This solution uses the HyperBeamforming technology to enable more accurate and concentrated narrow beams, significantly reducing signal interference and expanding single-site coverage by 30%.
By eliminating the need for additional physical sites, the partners say, the solution removes coverage holes caused by large inter-site distances, significantly boosts the downlink user-perceived rate, and reduces network deployment costs.
Jamel Sakka, Deputy CTO of inwi, explains: “Through this collaboration with Huawei, the deployment of the dual-band 8T8R solution has significantly improved network performance along the high-speed rail line, enabling every user to enjoy faster, more stable, and better connection experiences.” He adds: “Looking ahead, we will continue to deepen our partnership and innovate to further strengthen our network competitiveness and stimulate the development of the regional digital economy."
The partners say the deployment marks a major step toward delivering a reliable, seamless, high-quality mobile experience for customers travelling across Morocco.
